The Worst Things to Do for Your Diet According to a Nutritionist

Some of our eating and lifestyle habits may be negatively affecting our health and wellness goals in ways we’re not aware of. Chef and nutritionist Serena Poon warns these are the worst things we can do for our diets.

*Not getting enough quality sleep- A lack of sleep can disrupt your digestion and make you crave comfort foods the next day, but even worse? Not getting enough sleep on a regular basis could lead to a long-term disruption in digestion that could result in inflammation and chronic disease.

*Not staying hydrated- Being dehydrated can distort our hunger cues and make us think we’re hungry when we really just need a big glass of water.

*Eating when we’re not hungry- Some of us eat when we’re stressed or dealing with difficult emotions, which can confuse our bodies natural hunger signals, Serena explains.

*Not using portion control- Sure, nuts are packed with protein, fiber, and healthy omega-3s, but it’s easy to eat more than a serving and they’re also high in calories and fat, so stick with one handful of nuts a day.

*Not getting enough fruits and veggies- According to onestudy, 90% of Americans don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables, but they should make up a big part of what we eat so we get all the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants we need.

*Rushing through our meals- Lots of us eat really quickly and our five-minute meals can make eating seem like a chore instead of something we enjoy. Serena points out that taking our time when eating helps us enjoy the smells and flavors of the food more and being mindful helps us pay attention to our hunger signals so we stop when we’re actually full.
